How To Share Your Bedroom With A Baby In A One Bedroom Apartment

If you’re reading this, then we probably have at least one thing in common, raising a baby in a small space such as a one bedroom apartment. Either you’re pregnant, thinking about starting a family of your own, or the baby’s already here and now you’re thinking OH SH*T where’s this kid gonna go???

I had those same exact thoughts when I was expecting my son. I’m in a one bedroom apartment and had no idea where to start. How can I start looking for houses when the housing market is terrible right now? It’s impossible financially. That answered question 1. Are we staying or are we going? We’re staying.

Where is the baby’s room going to be? Should I start knocking down walls? OR....

Will we share a room for the time being? Yep! Question 2: Answered✔️

At first, I was thinking small, mini crib with changing table attached, but then I thought, is he too small to be in the crib yet? Let’s try it out.

Where Is The Baby Sleeping?

We received this Dream On Me Jayden 4-in-1 Mini Convertible Crib And Changer IN WHITE (I can only find the link for espresso color) and we set it up- looked beautiful. Sleek, saved space, it was perfect. I couldn’t wait to give birth and watch how comfortably my son slept in this crib. Fast forward to the day he came home, I did not feel comfortable putting him in the mini crib, (yep he was too small, I was neurotic and thought 3 day old kids could roll) so I had my husband take out the bassinet I received for my baby shower & wow. Lifesaver.

This Cloud Baby Bassinet attached right to my bed AND fit the height of my bed. My bed is pretty tall so I was looking for a bassinet that extended that high & this one did! It made nighttime feedings a breeze & eventually he went in the crib around month 4, (but we needed a standard size crib within a month of putting him in that crib so I don’t know how much I would recommend the mini crib).

I put the Graco Hadley 5-in-1 Convertible Crib With Drawer standard size crib in the front of my bed and it has been working great so far! It has storage under the crib, so another WIN for this one bedroom apartment.

Storage Container

This Storage Container fit right under the Graco Standard Crib & was great for storing blankets, occasion bibs, and some other miscellaneous things I didn't want in sight in my bedroom. It came in a 2 pack so one went under my bed and the other went under the crib!

Now- For Clothes...

My husband and I have both dressers and closets filled with our clothes, so where are his going to go? I bought this Tall Dresser and we put it right next to my husband's nightstand.

We put the books my son received as gifts on top of the dresser so he has some decor of his own in his “room” too. It also makes it easier to grab a book for nighttime stories instead of digging through a drawer. Worked like a charm.

Where Am I Changing The Baby?

Ok- so I put the mini crib in my parents house, sooooo what do I do for a changing table? I guess I could change him on the bed(?), but what about all the crap that I have to use daily to change him?

A week later, changing him on the bed wasn’t cutting it for my back anymore. I needed a changing table. To Amazon, I go

I found this cute little Delta Changing Table on wheels that had storage space underneath it and I ordered it. My husband and brother in law set it up in less than 45 minutes and I put the Skip Hop Changing Pad on it and it fit perfectly!

THEN- I ordered some Organizing Bins, which I put the baby necessities in such as:

Bin 1: bibs, burp clothes

Bin 2: Receiving blankets

Bin 3: creams, diaper rash cream

Bin 4: socks (in zip lock bags), hats (in zip lock bags) and crib/bassinet sheets

Bin 5: wash cloths, bath towels

Bin 6: miscellaneous items such as nail clipper kit, cream samples, bombs, brushes, baby vicks vapor rub, etc.

But Where Are The Diapers & Wipes?

The diapers & wipes are on the side of the changing table in this Hanging Diaper Organizer for Changing Table my sister found, unopened, in storage with her son’s baby gear and gave to me. I looked at it and said, “I don’t need it I have enough stuff”, but I am happy I did not toss it. This little thing came in handy and saved me sooooo much space (Thanks, sis!).

When a new baby is coming, especially in a tiny little space, it feels like a lot, and IT IS.

Remember this, people have done it before us, and people will do it after us!

WE GOT THIS MAMAS!!

My wife thinks we need to live in a mansion to make due with our baby.

We live in a small space in the city too, and I told her, with a little bit of creativity- we can make it work.

With a difficult housing market right now- it’s not in the cards to move to a larger space and I’m glad I stumbled across your site.

I’m going to forward this site to my wife and I hope she can learn a thing or two from your ingenuity and creativity.

    Looking forward to future content.
