In our household, we are obsessed with goldfish, ESPECIALLY the extra flavor blasted ones, but a lot of them contain gluten, and we try our best to be gluten free because it can sometimes hurt our tummies.
As he was reaching for the goldfish, the mom guilt kicked in on both ends: I feel like I am not giving my son something that he wants and it’s food related and then the other side, I shouldn’t be giving him gluten because if his stomach starts acting up from it, I’m going to feel absolutely terrible. So how can I have the best of both worlds?? I make my own goldfish. My son can indulge in extra cheddar goldfish, and the mom guilt can leave my brain for 15 minutes. WIN, win.
Gluten Free, Egg Free Heart Shaped Goldfish
Equipment
- 1 Bowl
- 1 Baking Pan
- 1 Parchment Paper
- 1 Heart Shaped Cookie Cutter (small)
Ingredients
- 1 cup gluten-free all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup cheddar powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 cup dairy-free butter cut into small pieces at room temperature
- 2-3 tbsp cold water
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine the gluten-free all-purpose flour, cheddar powder, & garlic powder. Mix until well combined.
- Add the dairy-free butter pieces to the bowl and stir it up until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add the cold water, one tablespoon at a time, and mix until the dough starts to come together. You may not need all the water, so add it slowly until the dough is just combined. If you add too much water, not to worry- just add some more flour!
- Transfer the dough to a clean surface and knead it gently to form a smooth ball.
- Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 325°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface to about 1/8-inch thickness. Use a small heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the crackers and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Sprinkle on a little salt.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until the edges are golden brown. Keep a close eye on them to prevent overcooking.
- Allow the heart crackers to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Enjoy! Take pictures of your children's reaction to the heart shaped crackers & have a core memory together!

Adjust the seasoning to your liking, and feel free to experiment with different shapes if you don't have a heart-shaped cookie cutter. We used the star cookie cutter for Fourth of July & the Bunny one for Easter! My son loves to help me in the kitchen so he was SUPER excited to help me make his favorite snack!
We got this Child Safe Kitchen Set and my son loves it! It comes with multiple cookie cutter shapes (including: heart, star, bunny & flower). I usually use the "cookie cutters" to cut sandwiches for him because hey, who doesn't like to eat different shapes? Am I Right? The knives it comes with are completely kid safe so I feel comfortable with him helping out in the kitchen.
